BIOENERGY PROJECTS

Innovating Energy is developing the Australian BioEnergy Landscape with a pipeline of renewable energy projects using food and agriculture wastes.

Biogas is produced from the anaerobic (oxygen free) digestion of organic matter. It can be made from a variety of organic resources, including agricultural waste, food scraps, food processing waste, energy crops, and sludge from wastewater treatment systems.

In addition to energy production, anaerobic digestion also produces digestate – the material remaining after anaerobic digestion of biodegradable feedstocks. Digestate is a nutrient-rich material that can be used as a fertiliser and applied on agricultural land as a replacement to chemical fertilisers.

BIOGAS AS A RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCE

Biogas is a source of energy that can be used to generate heat and electricity. Biogas can also be upgraded into biomethane: a gas with a chemical composition very similar to natural gas that can be injected into the gas grid and also used for industrial purposes or as a fuel for gas vehicles.

With bioenergy projects, assets generate revenue streams from:
(i) organic waste, food processing liquid organic waste.
(ii) renewable natural gas (RNG), electricity, and heat.
(iii) sale of nutrient rich bio-fertiliser, and CO2.

BIOENERGY AS A MAJOR CONTRIBUTOR
TO BASE LOAD POWER

The estimated biogas production potential in Australia is 103 Terawatts (103 TWh) = 371 Petajoules (371 PJ) which is comparable with current biogas production in Germany.

Australia’s biogas potential is equivalent to almost 9 per cent of Australia’s total energy consumption of 4,247 PJ in 2016-2017.

This represents up to 90,000 biogas units, with the potential to avoid up to 9 million tonnes of CO2e emissions each year.

Bioenergy Projects significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions by diverting organic waste from landfill  reducing methane emissions and displacing the use of fossil fuels.
